Some people might regard writing as a form of therapy -- the opportunity to exorcise the demons within. Toibin demurs. "It's almost the opposite," he says. "[Writing is] the manipulation of hurt, the holding on to it. The things you could do with it now. And not letting it go because, God, what else is there? You almost solidify things by writing about it, rather than releasing."
